Markdown, Obsidian, and exporting your notes
RIFT saves a Markdown copy of every note to your iCloud Drive, and can export everything as a zip.
Your notes are never locked in. There are two ways to get them out.
The RIFT Notes folder in iCloud Drive
RIFT keeps a Markdown copy of every note in a RIFT Notes folder in your iCloud Drive. It updates on its own as you write. Open it in the Files app on iPhone, or Finder on Mac.
Each note is one .md file, named by date and title:
2026-07-08-101500PDT-trip-planning.md
Each file starts with frontmatter that Obsidian and other Markdown apps understand:
---
id: 6F1C…
title: Trip planning
created: 2026-07-08T10:15:00-07:00
updated: 2026-07-08T10:22:41-07:00
latitude: 47.6062
longitude: -122.3321
tags:
- travel
---
Location and tags are only included when a note has them. With the Powerpack, voice recordings and photos are copied too, into Audio and Photos folders next to your notes.
Using it with Obsidian
Point an Obsidian vault at the RIFT Notes folder, or copy notes from it into your vault.
The sync goes one way: edits you make to the files don’t come back into RIFT. Two-way sync is on the roadmap.
Export everything
Go to Settings → Backup & Export → Export All Notes. RIFT makes a zip of every note as Markdown, plus an index, and opens the share sheet so you can save it anywhere.
To share a single note, use Share selected note or Copy selected note in the command palette.
